Cancún has plenty to offer, but you don’t need to book an excursion for every single day. Decide how much beach time you want, pick the outings that really interest you, and keep an eye on transportation costs. This guide is a planning starting point, not a claim that I’ve personally tried every stop.

Four-day starter itinerary
| Day | Suggested focus | Check before you go |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, settle in and enjoy the coast. | Transport, beach flags and hotel check-in arrangements. |
| 2 | Consider an Isla Mujeres ferry day trip. | Current ferry schedule, weather and your return plan. |
| 3 | Choose a cenote or archaeological excursion. | Travel time, admission, physical requirements and what is included. |
| 4 | Relax or explore a local food experience. | Leave a generous buffer if this is departure day. |
Choose excursions carefully
- Beaches: check local flags, surf and seasonal conditions each visit.
- Cenotes: use reputable operators and follow the site’s safety rules.
- Maya heritage: account for transport time, heat and current admission arrangements.
- Holbox: treat an island stay as a separate transport-and-ferry planning step, rather than an effortless add-on.
Choose where to stay
Compare beachfront accommodation with places farther from the Hotel Zone. Confirm access, transport, cleaning fees, taxes and cancellation terms. The right choice depends on whether you want a resort-focused trip or more independent exploring.
